DR CHAVURA

I went to vote on Saturday and as I headed towards the hordes of folkes handing out "how to vote pamphlets" , I saw a familiar face on one of the displays. STEPHEN CHAVURA - CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY. It was one of my old mates from my days at Target. Back then he had his haircut in a ponytail, these days he's known as Dr Chavura (philosiphy major etc). He was the guy who trained me at the registers and we had a good rapport. I remember he loved his instant noodles and we used to discuss the best brands. I was a suijmin guy , he liked this other obscure brand that i just can't recall. Anyway, he left to go to uni to become a teacher. Looks like he took a bit of a detour. Unfortunately I didn't vote for him, labor got my vote....

THE NET

My friend's 33.6k modem broke so I told him I had a spare 56k modem lying around that he could borrow. Geez, I dunno how I could EVER go back to dialup ever again. To be fair he only uses it to MSN but it got me a bit nostalgic about my initial net experience.

I first got on the net in 96, during my first year at uni. It was the first thing I did when I arrived at uni, I applied for a net account. The net at that time was just starting to take off and I'd read a lot about it heading into uni. Can't remember the price for the account but it was pretty cheap. Though I remember the hell I had setting it up. I remember my dad's mate an IT guy tried to help us set things up but the darned thing didn't work so we ended up getting a new computer.
Voila, things worked!!!!! I remember using TRUMPET WINSOCK to connect, haha, what a blast from the past. TRUMPET WINSOCK. So the first time it connected and you'd see the script messages scroll to the end, a few seconds wait and then an IP address pop up. Ok so thats' it, what next????? I remember calling the helpdesk cause I had no idea what to do next. "Open up Netscape and start browsing......" . Wow, I'll never forget the amazement of seeing that netscape navigator icon in the top corner - the big N and flying specks - moving for the first time. It was a rush.

At the time, there was only a limited number of users who could log on and in 2 hr blocks.
You'ld get the engaged signal and I distinctly remember the joy when you'd get the modem hissing connection sound. It was music to my ears. I'ld spend hrs on end trying and trying...

Can't believe it's been 10 years. Damn I'm getting old. Sometimes I take for granted how good we have it now. No doubt things will be different in another 10 years but it certainly brings back memories of how I first got acquainted with the world wide web....
